Highlights

  • Blood Hunters in Dungeons & Dragons are a complex class that relies on blood magic and can be either melee fighters or casters.
  • The Belt of Stone Giant Strength is a helpful magical item for Blood Hunters as it raises the wearer's strength and combines well with certain subclass abilities.
  • The Cloak of Displacement is a useful defensive item for Blood Hunters as it creates an illusion of the wearer and forces attackers to roll at a disadvantage.

Not a common sight in a Dungeons & Dragons adventuring party, the Blood Hunter is a class from the show Critical Role and isn't part of the official canon. Depending on the type of game being played, their rolls can depend on many different stats, and they're a complex class for even an experienced player to manage.

The key to the power of the Blood Hunter is Hemocraft, the art of blood magic, and they are more casters than melee fighters, but that depends entirely on the build and subclass. Some of the magical items of the D&D universe that are ideal for Blood Hunters might also depend on finer details, but overall these are some of the best magical items for your Blood Hunter.

8 Belt Of Stone Giant Strength (Legendary)

It's either Strength or Dexterity that determines the power of a Blood Hunter, and for those that need some extra strength, any of the belts in the "giant" series would be helpful. Others are Common to Very Rare and are much easier to find.

The Belt of Stone Giant Strength raises the stat of the wearer to 17, which is also helpful to Blood Hunters that fight from melee range. Those who have taken the subclass Order of the Ghostslayer and have abilities like Rite of the Dawn can combine their increased weapon damage with radiant damage as well.

7 Periapt Of Wound Closure (Uncommon)

Blood Hunters are limited to light and medium armor, so anything that helps with defensive or healing abilities is a good choice. The Periapt Of Wound Closure has two effects, and both of them help with wounds after the fact as opposed to augmenting the Blood Hunter's defenses.

When the character has been wounded and rolls to restore hot points, this handy necklace doubles it. If affected by a DoT, with a spell or something like Rend, this pendant will keep you from dying at the beginning of your turn.

6 Cloak of Displacement (Rare)

Plenty of casters use this handy cloak, which provides an important defensive power to any class that has to deal with a limited AC. It's a Rare item, but not that difficult to find either through a vendor in a big city or a medium-sized dungeon.

Put it on, and it will project an illusion of yourself two feet away from your actual location, and any creature that attempts an attack will have to roll at a disadvantage. If you do take damage, however, the cloak's effect will wear off, and it also doesn't work if you're incapacitated or restrained.

5 Blood Fury Tattoo (Legendary)

Magical Tattoos from Tasha's Guide To Everything

Magical tattoos were introduced to the D&D universe by Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and they're popular with several classes but uniquely suited to Blood Hunters.

This one is for those that use melee attacks. It gives the Blood Hunter extra damage, extra hit points, and the ability to counter-attack.

The Blood Hunter can deal necrotic damage every time they hit an enemy with their weapon. The Blood Hunter absorbs that necrotic damage as their hit points.

The tattoo also gives them the power to use an extra action to counter-attack any creature and gives them an advantage in combat.

4 Headband Of Intellect (Uncommon)

Intellect is another important stat for Blood Hunters, and the Headband of Intellect can give your character a boost. It's a popular item and appears in several different incarnations throughout D&D-related IPs, even turning up in the Early Access version of Baldur's Gate 3.

Being of Uncommon quality, it's fairly easy to find or buy and can be found in a variety of places. It has the effect of raising the wearer's Intelligence to 19, but it doesn't have any effect if the stat is already this high.

3 Blood Armor of Chaos (Very Rare)

This is a homebrew item, but so is the Blood Hunter class, so if the DM allows one they'll probably allow the other. Blood Armor gives the wearer the same AC as if they were wearing plate, and gives you a +3 to your AC on top of that.

The catch is that this magical armor is Cursed. It's fused to your skin and can only be removed with a Greater Restoration or Wish spell.

Failure to remove it means the inability to rest properly and the Charisma check fails as the armor starts to rust and your skin starts to rot.

2 Javelin of Lightning (Uncommon)

Any character or class that specialized in ranged damage would also seek out this powerful and handy weapon. It's a decent javelin to start with, dealing the standard 1d6 damage of most other weapons in its class.

Speak the javelin's command word to activate its lightning power, and it turns into a shaft of electricity that does damage to any creature standing between you and the intended target. If the target is successfully hit, it not only takes the regular weapon damage but also 4d6 electricity damage. This power can only be used once a day.

1 Manual of Quickness of Action (Very Rare)

Manual of Quickness of Action via Wizards of the Coast

Another handy item for most casting classes, especially those that use Dexterity, and that means Blood Hunters. After studying this tome of balance and coordination exercises, your character's Dexterity score will increase by 2.

Once it is used, it loses its magical properties for the next hundred years.

Unlike some other magical items that increase a character's stats only to a certain level and don't stack with other abilities, this one will raise the maximum stat as well. Even if your Blood Hunter's Dexterity is maxed out, after studying this book for at least 48 hours over six days or less, the stat will be two points higher.
