TheGamer - Katamari Damacy https://www.thegamer.com A quirky puzzle game from the mind of designer Keita Takahashi, Katamari Damacy first launched on PS2 in 2004. In it, you control the Prince of All Cosmos, tasked with rolling a kind of magnetic ball around, gathering enough materials to right the King's destructive and drunken mistake. Not only does he need to single-handedly replace all the stars in the sky that his idiot father destroyed, but he also has to listen to his dad ramble and passive-aggressively talk down to him. However, The King Of All Cosmos isn’t a total omnipotent jerk as he’s scattered special Royal Presents around Earth for The Prince to find. This doesn’t exactly make up for his awful behavior, but hey, it’s a start.

<![CDATA[Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn And We Love Katamari Reroll Trademarked By Bandai Namco]]> Bandai Namco is a publisher that has its fingers in all sorts of pies at the moment. Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Tekken, and The Dark Pictures series are just a few of the big-name franchises it helps/has helped publish, so it's a company that definitely keeps itself busy. Even with all of that, it might have two other big projects currently in development, as Bandai Namco recently trademarked both Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn and We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie in Europe.

He’s already been added to Gears 5 as a playable character, but with news of Netflix revving up the adaptation engine, the animal has stepped into the ring once again to prove he is the perfect man to portray Marcus Fenix.

<![CDATA[Katamari Damacy Is A Horror In Disguise]]> Bright colours, upbeat music, quirky gods, and collectables. Katamari Damacy is a cutesy fun time, right? Wrong. It’s all about causing a planet-wide avalanche that devours everything in sight, picking up people and buildings and throwing them to the side like a sentient tornado whose one goal is to horde humanity’s belongings until there’s nothing left. I can picture it now, a Cloverfield-like human perspective where people run to the subway tunnels so they can hide from the little green alien ripping their cities apart senselessly. It’s terrifying.

<![CDATA[The 9 Most Whimsical Areas In Video Game History]]> Video games can transport you anywhere that you can imagine. From a land filled with corrupted undead to one inhabited by platforming meat cubes, their only limit is a game developer’s imagination and budget. More often than not, though, these worlds seem to be dark reflections of our own, allowing them to tell stories of desperation and violence.

<![CDATA[The Friendliest Aliens In Video Games]]> If there's one thing video games have taught players it's that aliens are scary. Necromorphs, Xenomorphs, and The Flood are just some of the terrifying creatures that exist beyond our solar system that want to murder, abduct, or both. But in a universe filled with infinite possibilities, there's gotta be some nice aliens out there, right?

<![CDATA[10 Most Unique Video Game Character Designs Of All Time, Ranked]]> Characters are at the heart of the game, and essentially they're what keeps everything together, inspiring players to return. Unfortunately, in recent years many triple-A titles have stuck by the same formula of making characters look as realistic as possible, often at the cost of removing all their individuality. It's why games with such out-there character designs are worth mentioning.

<![CDATA[10 Video Game Series That Need To Be On The Playdate]]> When Panic Inc. announced that it was working on a new handheld console back in 2019, it immediately caught the attention of many due to its simple design and potential for developers. The company was founded in 1997 and mostly worked on software for Apple products before entering the world of video game publication in 2016. After publishing only two games, the well-received Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game, Panic conceived an idea for the Playdate and shifted its focus onto its development.

<![CDATA[These Games Justify Upgrading To A Switch OLED]]> Back in January I wrote about upgrading from a Switch Lite to a Switch OLED and the staggering difference between the two. The bigger screen, sharper display, richer colours, deeper blacks, and sturdy kickstand make this by far the best version of Nintendo's hybrid console. Five months later and I'm still in love with it—and continuing to discover games that make that vivid, pin-sharp display sing. Here are a few personal highlights that have, for me, more than justified the cost of the upgrade.

<![CDATA[Happy Weed Day, Here Are The Best Games To Play While You’re Stoned]]> Gaming and marijuana are a match made in heaven. Like Mountain Dew, Doritos, or anime body pillows, weed is one of the many things that forms a perfect pairing with games. I have a brother who exists to work, game, eat, and get stoned. Part of me admires his simplistic approach towards life, not letting things get on top of him so long as the end of the day means he can get blazed and dive into Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. We stan.

<![CDATA[We Forgive You, King! The Most Evil Characters Fans Sided With Because They Looked Cool]]>

Ever since Dragon Ball Z's Vegeta destroyed an entire planet for literally no reason (other than wanting to be a total dick), only to become everyone’s favorite “anti-hero”, it has become pretty clear that people in the geek space can have a pretty selective memory. This stuff is all over the media we love too. From Venom to the Joker to Negan, sometimes being cool is all that fans need to forgive horrific behavior.Related: Most Intimidating RPG AntagonistsThis has never been more true than in video games. Games love to introduce “badass” anti-heroes. These characters commit horrific crimes and rack up body counts only to later "repent" and join the heroes. Hell, sometimes, even the characters who have zero redemptive qualities end up being the most popular representatives of their games. It can’t be said enough, there is something unhealthy about the number of avatars online that feature characters who have been responsible for genocidal acts. As a community, we are not okay.Warning: Persona 5 Spoiler Contained Within

There are some crazy, mind-bending games out there, such as Eternal Darkness, a GameCube game in which you lose your sanity and start to see that the game is deleting save files and restarting the GameCube, among other things. Another fantastically bizarre game would be Amnesia, where you play as a character who basically starts to become insane through the darkness, and you begin to experience different types of hallucinations.

<![CDATA[There Was A Katamari MMO (And Boy, Was It Weird)]]> There are less than a handful of games as strange as Katamari Damacy. Everything from its story - which involves the omnipotent King Of All Cosmos destroying the galaxy in a drunken stupor - to its art style to its gameplay is straight out of some acid-tripping weeb's fever dream. Yet, for all its offbeat imagery, the game has persevered as a beloved video oddity. It has even inspired an entire franchise of equally bizarre experiences. To date, there are around 14 different Katamari titles, including remakes, portable games, and even mobile games like the suggestively titled Touch My Katamari.

<![CDATA[Wattam Review PC]]> Keita Takahashi already has a pretty wild track record. He's the man who somehow conceived the insane worlds of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy. Both these games specialize in adorable yet bonkers realities where the King Of The Cosmos can force his diminutive son to reassemble the stars after his drunken bender destroyed them, or a worm-like Girl can stretch across the entire galaxy.

<![CDATA[Do Gamers Really Want Art?]]> With games as art being used as a talking point in the mainstream media these days, it's important to ask the question whether gamers actually want that. Saying that a hobby is a form of art gives that hobby authenticity, and is often used as a talking point. However, games that call themselves "art" often don't do as well as their more basic counterparts. Call of Duty can put out release after release and gamers will buy it up, but artistic games struggle if they try something too outside of the box.
